Alba Surf club FAQ

01 Who we are

We love nature, sports and adventure! The group is made of people from all ages, levels of ability, and nationalities! We are crazy about surf and like to have fun!!! In this “Club” you will get the opportunity to practice the sport you love at the time you meet mates of your interests.

02 About us

We are a group of friends looking for more buddies interested in going surfing. Anybody is welcome to join us!!! We are currently more than 100 active members… WE GO SURFING EVERY WEEKEND!!!

We head to the beach as often as possible whilst sharing cars between us. It is always a great experience to get to know new mates in an active environment. We all love surfing, sports and a healthy lifestyle. We prefer to hit the breaks in a group; it’s safer when confronting the locals, LOL!. It is always safer to surf in a group were we all look after each other.

This is not a surf school; it is a Surf Club were you surf your own way!. We make it what we want… It is a super relaxed and exciting environment. There are no rules; each day develops in behaviour of what the members that join the trip make it, so no one day is ever the same ;-). The element of surprise is always present!!!!

03 Alba Surf Club supports charity actions

The Club has formed an association with the Foundation for Developing Cambodian Communities (FDCC, www.fdcc.org.au) on April 2009 which is a group of Melbourne based volunteers who have set up and run an orphanage for girls in Cambodia.

05 How the surf club works

We all play a little role in the club; some team members that own cars drive and the rest pay for a spot in the car, we share the petrol expenses between all. Even the public transportation to get to the coast is more expensive ;-) not to mention it takes longer and you are limited to certain breaks. With the club you get the chance to go a range of breaks, anywhere in Victoria (Great Ocean Road, Mornington Peninsula, Phillip Island, Wilson’s Promontory National Park…) we decide where to go depending on the forecast conditions so we ensure we surf the best conditions each day. We are not just a Surf Club we are brothers and sisters of the waves!!!

06 Meeting time

We meet early in the mornings to surf offshore conditions. Exact time of the event at the webpage: www.albasurfclub.com.

07 Meeting place

The meeting point for a day trip is always the same 567 Punt Road, South Yarra, VIC-3141. The meeting point has easy public transport to either the corner of Toorak and Punt Rd (Tram # 8) or to the corner of Commercial Rd and Punt Rd (Tram # 72).

08 Where we go surfing

Most often we go to: Phillip Island (Woolamai, Smith Beach, YCW, Surfer Point, Forest Cave, Cat Bay and Right Point); Great Ocean Road (Torquay, South Side, Fairhaven, Jan Juc, Winki, Bells, 13th Beach, Point Addis, Spot Creek, Lorne, Kennet River, Port Campbell and Apollo Bay), Mornington Peninsula (Portsea, 2nd Reef and Gunnamatta Beach), and Wilson’s Promontory National Park (Whisky beach and Squeaky Beach). We also organise once a month Surf Camps during Australian long weekends to Wilson’s Promontory, Apollo Bay, Phillip Islands, Port Campbell, Sorrento and Torquay.

09 How often we go surfing

We go every weekend, every Saturday & every Sunday all year round, we even go midweek sometimes when conditions are pumping ;-)  We do one day surf trips and if that coincides with a long weekend we also organise long weekend trips throughout Victoria.

10 Groups size

The surf trips usually contain between 5 and 25 people, depending on the weather, season and various other factors. Of course in the winter only the hard core crew dare to surf ;-)

11 Surf levels we have got

No matter what’s your level you will always find mates of your surf ability. You can decide between go to the break and discuss the best manoeuvre or stay at the wait water learning how to surf. Levels we have got: 20% Advance, 60% Intermediate and 20% beginner.

12 Surf gear for rent

The majority of us have our own surf gear; however if you need the club have surf gear for rent. Club members can rent board for $15 and wetsuit for $10; non-members get the surf board for $20 and the wetsuit for $15.

13 How you sign in for a surf trip

“I just came from France and I never thought I’d make such good friends so quickly. I am so happy I found your sports club and got to know such wonderful people.”

B.      Richard Proudlove_UK / AU_37

“Alba’s Surf Club is run voluntarily by Alba Ruiz Leon as a way for Melbourne based surfers to meet, surf and socialise with other surfers. The club started out as just a group of mates but has grown to more than 90 members. At the moment we have new members signing upon an almost weekly basis. The members range from beginners to those that are more experienced and include a mix of Victorians and travellers from all over the world. Note that the club is not run for profit. Alba manages it on a completely voluntary basis and, I think you will agree that she has setup something that is pretty special”.
